- Insert master key - reverser key
- Check start/run is on start/isolate, Turn on gen field, fuel pump switches on right driving console [^1]
- Press the green start button above the speedo to the right and hold till engine starts - if it won't start, check red engine stop button is up. If not, pull it up, remove the key, reinsert the key, go to forward then neutral then press engine start button again.
- Press the start/run button which is next to gen field etc. to the run position
- Cut in brakes using EM2000
- Release brakes - 5 bar
- Apply brakes to 3 bar to charge
- Release brake
- Headlights and markers on - above left window
- Reverser to forward
- Release park brake - red button above and left of speedo

Engine
- will not start - check isolation/start, engine run, genfield and fuel pump switch positions.
- check big red engine stop button is up. If you have to pull it up, reset the loco by removing and reinserting key

Brakes
- check brakes are cut in on EM2000
- check emergency plunger is not down.
- check brake test switch (above left side windwo) is not in test position
- check other-end cab for emergency plunger down or independent brake applied.
- Data meters - various information systems such as engine revs, govenor, etc.
- Unit information - loco number, fuel level
- Traction cutout - cut in/out truck motors
- English/metric - select units
- Brake cutout - to cut in/out loco brake control
- Brake timing - pass or goods brake timing selection

Slow Speed Control (SSC)
- ton on using switch on left side near brake controls
- set speed using rocker switch on left side near brake controls
- press 'Start' on EM2000
- turn off on EM2000 then the switch on left side to finish.
- Enter train length menu by pressing 1
- Press enter to enter
- Find lenght of your train in pause menu
- enter length (yards x 3 for feet)
- press enter
- To arm system, press and hold train length button on LHS - it will beep
- Press the train length button at speed change sign - the system will beep when tail is past that point.
